The AIST Foundation Steel Intern Scholarship provides up to 50 one-year scholarships (plus a top Premier Intern Scholarship) paired with a paid summer internship or co-op at a North American steel company, for undergraduates in engineering, computer science, data science, environmental/sustainability science, or industrial safety fields pursuing careers in the steel industry.

Special eligibility to verify

  • Requires paid summer internship/co-op at a North American steel company: Recipients must complete a paid summer internship or co-op at a North American steel company as part of the award, must be available and willing to relocate for the placement, and must maintain a 2.5+ GPA plus a satisfactory internship performance review to retain the award.

Application requirements

  • Submit resume in PDF format
  • Submit essay (max 2 pages): Essay must cite professional goals and explain interest in a steel-industry career.

    • Describe your professional goals, explain why you are interested in a career in the steel industry, and discuss how your skills could be applied to enhance the industry. not to exceed two pages in length
  • Obtain 1-5 letters of recommendation: Letters are sent directly to the program contact.
  • Submit academic transcript
  • Complete the online application by the deadline: Deadline: 5 October 2026 for 2027-2028 awards.
